My best friend’s job is to wear expensive clothes and look good. Both of us are not from the top or middle class, I and her are both from a hopeless poor home. But I should not have said ‘ hopeless’, we are the hope of our parents, to make a change in their lives and to transform the state of their poverty and penury to richness. I could see the hope in their eyes right from the day I was given birth to. And as i grew up, I saw it clearer, they had hope that they we were going to be better and I will be better than them. Perhaps because we have what they never tasted, education.

Days, months, and years passed by and we became graduates with no jobs, but our parents never lost hope. They prayed each day for God’s favour to locate us. The hopefulness of our parents had made them hate to die, or hear one mentioned death around them. Although they were poor, we were there investment. But after our graduation, all we had to do was to dress smart and keep applying for jobs and attending interviews.

Should I say my friend got used to looking so expensive or should I say looking expensive gives her all the respects she should have if she were truly expensive? She had no job, rather than to spend her last Kobo to buy a new dress. Her life began to change, she even began to ask her parents to send her money. What for? There is a job she is qualified for but a sum must be paid, Like a bribe.
It was all a lie, she has become an expensive girl in an expensive world that you have to look expensive to get expensive things. It became her addiction to look expensive, and any day she had no good clothes, she would rather stay back home than to go out with an old dress. A time came that, her parents could not send her any money and suddenly there was even no food in her room. At first it looked like she was having multiple lovers, but it suddenly became worst and it appeared to be prostitution she engaged in to look expensive.

The world is expensive and people become expensive that young people are no longer hungry to eat but are hungry to look expensive. The days are far gone when young ladies prostituted and guys stole to pay off school fees, to food, and to take care of their parents, just things more legitimate than looking expensive.

Today, ladies prostitute just to look expensive. Young people get involved in dirty acts to look expensive like the expensive world. So they engage in anything that pays money.

The quest to look expensive has led this generation to having many youths with no future rather than looking expensive. Everyone needs a white collar job, everyone wants an expensive lifestyle but does not want to work for it. Our parents spend a lot, which includes their strength on the farm and body in the sun, their farm produce sold, their time and prayers expended, yet we end up with a dead heart and a dead hope. Our parents wanted us to have all they did not have. But to us, all we need is to look expensive, wear expensive clothes and shoes, sleep in expensive houses, we just want to be “classic” with a dead heart that is not jealous to work hard and earn for itself.

I began to feel bad about our situation, I thought I had seen it all, until I came a cross a lady. I walked passed her, while she and her friend stood staring seductively at a young guy, looking all spiced up, smart and handsome ” This guy is my taste”, she said unashamed. Perhaps it was I who was ashamed to say how I feel about expensive things. Young men no longer feel proud about what they have achieved, they now have pride in the clothes they wear, shoes, wristwatches and necklaces, and their prices. Little wonder there are more miscreants, idle people with high and expensive tastes. And the girls with no future but unbridled taste for expensive items. Girls who want a rich guy and wouldn’t mind to be slaves to him. They do not have a heart to be rich, rather they need a rich boyfriend and husband.

How can you let your taste for expensive things turn you into what you should not even have imagined to be in the initial stage? How can you graduate and lie all day in the room waiting for your parents to still feed you? How can you envy what you cannot afford? How do you dare to be burden to those that thought your would carry their burden? Life is too short to enjoy what you did not work for. I assure you that you will not care about been expensive when the money comes, you will like to hide yourself from expensive things because you have bigger plans.

Clothes are meant primarily to conceal our nakedness and not to serve as yardsticks for measuring our wealth or social standing. This is a call, in fact, a clarion call, to all youths to drop this untamed quest for expensive things. Fake life would take us no where. Rather than speeding all our incomes and that of our parents on expensive clothes, why not try to invest in one venture or the other and truly live big when it’s time?

It’s indeed a pity that many promising young guys and ladies no longer have future ambitions than to look expensive, to dress in the latest fashion trend in town. Let’s drop that already, and focus on nobler things. How many of us are building businesses now? How many of us are dedicated to a specific goal in life? It’s shocking how everyone’s dream now is no longer to affect lives, to live a footprint behind, to make marks, but to simply look expensive. May God help us.
