There was tension in Ilesa, Osun State, on Tuesday morning after suspected political thugs attacked supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), killing two people and leaving two others critically injured.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7:30am at Igbogi area of Ilesa, where APC supporters were gathering ahead of the party’s final rally scheduled for 8am.
The Nation learnt that the attackers, who were reportedly armed with pump-action rifles, stormed the area and opened fire on the party supporters.
A source in the area, identified as Sola, said the victims were preparing for the rally when the attackers arrived.
“We were preparing for our final rally today and our leaders said we should converge at Igbogi for take-off, which is scheduled for 8am.
“At 7:30am, the thugs stormed the venue and were shooting sporadically, leaving four people dead. It is so unfortunate. This is coming barely three days after Amotekun shot some members,” he said.
However, the Media Head of the APC Campaign Council, Oluremi Omowaiye, confirmed the attack but said two of the four victims died, while the other two were critically injured.
“Four of our supporters were shot, two of them are dead while two others are in critical condition. The woman leader of our party in Ilesa is part of the victims and is currently gasping for breath at Wesley Guild Hospital,” he said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said he would make findings and provide details of the incident.
